Recognizing there are significant student mental health needs within our community, East Valley School District has a unique opportunity to pilot a grant funded student mental health initiative through Spokane County. We are incredibly grateful to Spokane County and the City of Spokane Valley for their interest and understanding of youth trauma. This mental health initiative will identify students who may need extra support and ensure they are connected with services or programs to help them succeed. EVHS will participate in a nationally-normed screening tool to identify possible needs and deliver school-based mental health and wellness services by a licensed mental health professional.
Beginning in middle school, our current Juniors (Class of 2025) have experienced far too many losses of their peer group. As such, the ISW screening will begin with our 11th grade cohort of students. Because the screening is responsive in real time, we are unsure as to how quickly we will be able to move to the next class of students. Stated simply, we do not know how long it will take to get through a full grade level of students. Our hope is to be able to move to another grade level soon; however, this will be completely dependent upon the process and the unknown time it will take. We have been assured the ISW program will be here for the foreseeable future.
Participation is voluntary and families and/or students will be provided multiple opportunities to opt out. Two mental health clinicians have been assigned to EVHS and their primary role is to support the roll-out of the screening tool and to deliver school-based mental health services to a caseload of students identified through the screening process. Their work is tied to the screening process and is not intended to supplant the crisis services available in Spokane County.
Please mark your calendars and plan to attend an influential parent/family event geared toward educating adults on how to have hard, but necessary, conversations with your children and what to look for. Our children are exposed to a great deal of easily attained temptations. The Hidden in Plain Sight interactive presentation is an opportunity for parents and families to arm themselves with knowledge. Along with the presentation, there will also be a wealth of resources provided. As part of the presentation, a typical teenager's room will be displayed to include many nefarious objects hidden in plain sight. Knowledge is power; please join us for this invaluable presentation. Please note this event is for adults 21+.
In partnership with the staff, the CCS PTSA has long had the goal of making some improvements to the current playground equipment. Over the course of the past six years, the PTSA leadership and membership has had the goal of raising $60,000 to support the dream of new equipment. Between fundraising and grant writing with Kiwanis, the goal has come to fruition. After surveying students and communicating with playground companies, the items below have been ordered. The playground enhancements pictured below, will hopefully be installed during the summer months. Thank you PTSA and CCS for making this dream become a reality. As always, our students and community are the beneficiaries of this partnership.
